Tempo Ballroom Dance – Feb 20, 2010

The next Tempo dance will feature the Annex Band from Cambridge OH. This is a 16 piece big band under the leadership of Berk Jones. Berk is a talented musician and band leader, but most importantly he continues to inspire this group of musicians to preserve the “big band” sound in our current musical environment. The band’s renditions of traditional and more current numbers are spot on and show the commitment the band has to the music and their audience. The ages of the band members span decades, but they are unified in their love of the music and their high standard of musicianship. Every time I hear this band my confidence in the preservation of our American musical heritage grows. I know they enjoy playing for the Tempo Dance Club and we certainly enjoy having them. This is a dance you do not want to miss!

Come out and enjoy a wonderful night of music and dance! The dance begins at 8 pm at St. Ambrose Church in Little Hocking, Ohio.

Per couple individual dance admission is $45.
Per couple Member invited guest dance admission is $35.   Please note, a couple may attend as an invited guest one time.

*Special – Attend the February 2010 dance and join the club for $90!
That breaks down to $30 for three dances!

Next Dance Night – April 9th 2010

In case you missed it in the last email, the February and March Dance Nights were cancelled.  The River Cities and Tempo Dance clubs each have events scheduled for Feb & March, so I cancelled the “Dance Nights” in those months.  I didn’t realize the Feb dance night was advertised in the Parkersburg News recently – referred to as the Mid-Ohio Valley Dance Series at St. Ambrose.  But in any case, there is no dance this Friday, Feb 12th, at St. Ambrose.

Mark your calendar for the April 9th Dance Night.  We will feature a latin movement workshop with Sherri and Bruce Killen!

River Cities Ballroom Dance Saturday Feb 6th – CANCELLED!

CANCELLED!  The band is snowed in, and you may be too.
We’ll let you know when it’s rescheduled!

This Saturday the  River Cities dance club is holding a ballroom dance at the Lafayette Hotel in Marietta, Ohio from 8-11:30 pm.

The band is Warren Brothers Combo. Several of you noted a very good dancer at the New Year’s Eve dance at the Legion- well THAT was Ron Warren and his wife!!! As a dancer himself, he KNOWS what dancers need as far as tempo, time, etc.

The cost is $75 per couple with a reservation (that means you have called or e-mailed Sue Montera in advance – you do not have to pay in advance.) If you decide to come, consider joining for the rest of the year for $150. That would give you the last 3 dances for the cost of 2 dances. The final two bands are great dance bands also! The final band is the Dan Zola Orchestra (May 7TH- AND NO CLASS THAT NIGHT) a 19 piece big band from the Cleveland area. The Club members love this band because they are tight and have such a great sound. Imagine what you would pay to travel to see a band like this! (Gas, hotel, food, not to mention the time to drive there and back.)

Swing Dance Workshop at Dance Night Jan 8, 2010 CANCELLED!

Dance Night January 8, 2010 featuring Tim and Edie King!

Happy New Year Dancers!

I hope you were able to dance in the New Year! If not, this Friday night January 8th  Saturday January 16th is the first “Dance Night”  will be a 50’s Dance at Ambrose Hall. We are excited to SWING into 2010 with guest instructors for the workshop. Edie and Tim King have graciously agreed to hold a Swing Dance workshop. The workshop will be from 8 – 9 pm, with dance music playing from 9 – 11 pm. We will also play a lot of swing music so we can practice what we just learned.

Here’s a bit about Tim and Edie …

Tim and Edie King of Middleport, Ohio began dancing in 1990, as students of a popular area instructor, Gerald Powell. They have been trained in ballroom, swing, and Latin dances, and have assisted Powell in many of his group beginner classes. Along with dancing for their own enjoyment, they have appeared in numerous talent and variety shows that benefit local organizations and charities. Their teaching emphasis is to help beginner students become comfortable with the basic steps and patterns, while encouraging them to keep dancing for the lifelong benefits of physical exercise and social enjoyment that it offers.

We hope to get some teenagers at this dance night, so please encourage kids 13 and over to join us! You can call it a 50’s dance instead of swing…that might help!

Since we are bringing the King’s up for the workshop, I’d like to get an idea of how many people will be there for the workshop.

So – please take a minute to send  an email to  and let me know if you can make it. Along with the reply, give me at least one suggestion to make Dance Night better for you.

Tempo Christmas Ballroom Dance Saturday December 12th! Guests Welcome!

This Saturday, December 12th, The Tempo Dance Club will hold its annual Christmas Dance. I am pleased to have the Vince Vilanova Orchestra provide the music for this dance. This orchestra performs frequently in the Pittsburgh/Wheeling area and is making a special trip to perform for us. You should expect a very special night of great dance music.

The dress is “black tie invited” which simply means the gentlemen are encouraged to wear a tuxedo, but may also wear a dark jacket and tie. Ladies are encouraged to wear long evening gowns or a cocktail dress as an alternative. As in years past, professional photographer Mel Samples will be taking our pictures.

Non-members are invited to attend this dance at a cost of $35. You do not have to be invited by a member to attend. Come out and enjoy a festive night of music and dance to celebrate the Holidays.

I look forward to seeing you Saturday!       Peter

**The dance begins at 8 pm at St. Ambrose Church in Little Hocking, Ohio.  For more details, click on the  Tempo Dance Club page to the right.
