The February Dance for the River Cities dance club has been rescheduled for Sunday, April 18th from 5 pm – 8:30 pm at the Lafayette Hotel in Marietta, Ohio.

Due to the Sunday afternoon schedule, the hotel has allowed a deviation from hotel policy and will allow us to bring food. Sue Montera suggests that everyone bring a cold finger food type of dish that can be shared with others, sort of a “pot luck” but not hot foods.

The band is Warren Brothers Combo. Several of you noted a very good dancer at the New Year’s Eve dance at the Legion- well THAT was Ron Warren and his wife!!! As a dancer himself, he KNOWS what dancers need as far as tempo, time, etc.

The cost is $75 per couple with a reservation (that means you have called or e-mailed Sue Montera in advance – you do not have to pay in advance.) The final band is the Dan Zola Orchestra (May 7TH- AND NO CLASS THAT NIGHT) a 19 piece big band from the Cleveland area. The Club members love this band because they are tight and have such a great sound. Imagine what you would pay to travel to see a band like this! (Gas, hotel, food, not to mention the time to drive there and back.)

This Saturday, April 17^th, the Tempo Club will have its first dance at the new Shriners Function Hall at 244 Watson Avenue, Parkersburg, WV, from 8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. The Shriners have requested that we not bring in any alcoholic or nonalcoholic liquid refreshments since there will be a full cash bar available at the dance. You are invited to bring your own snacks and the club will also provide snacks. The Shriners have offered us a wonderful venue for dancing so please respect their request regarding liquid refreshments.

 The Simcox Big Band, a sixteen-piece band from Zanesville, OH, will be performing and we can all look forward to a great night of music and dancing. The band has been playing for audiences in Ohio, Indiana and West Virginia for the past 30 years.

 From I-77 — take the Rt. 50 7^th St. exit, go west on Rt. 50, take the first exit which is 7^th St, turn left at stop sign, follow 7^th St. to the Travel Lodge where you will turn right onto Watson Ave. The facility will be on your right approximately1/4 mile up the hill.

 If coming east on Rt. 50, take the 7^th St exit. At the end of the exit ramp stay to the right and proceed to Watson Ave.

Sherri and Bruce Killen will be our guest instructors for Salsa Night!  Get your hips ready – Sherri is also a Belly Dance instructor and Bruce is also a DJ who features latin music!  Bruce previously played salsa dance music at the Old Marina in Vienna, WV.

The workshop will take place from 8 – 9 pm. Then practice your new moves with Bruce spinning the tunes from 9 – 11!

This Dance Night will be a festive dance party, great for beginning and advanced dancers!  Be sure to bring a dance partner so you can use your new moves in the Bachata, and continue dancing the night away to the  Mambo, Cha-cha, and Rhumba!  If you’re a beginner, there will be plenty of experienced dancers to help you learn new dances.

*Bring your teenagers (13 and up) and introduce them to a few steps.
* Bring your own snacks and beverages (no alcohol).
* $15 per couple fee will be donated to St. Ambrose to cover the hall rental.
* $5 per teenager
* Casual dress – from jeans to dress, whatever you’re in the mood for.

Consider this a fun date-night (even a family date-night) that will help you brush up your dance skills. It will give you great practice and get you ready for the area’s dance clubs!

This Saturday the Tempo Club will hold its final dance at Ambrose Hall after which the club will move to the new Shriners’ Hall in Parkersburg. It is appropriate that the Ron Warren Band will play at this dance since I often refered to them as our “house band” at Ambrose Hall. Ron’s group always provides a wonderful mix of dance music.

Admission is $45 or $35 if you come as the guest of a member, a one time opportunity. You may also attend this dance and the April 17^th dance as a club member by joining the club for $60.

Looks like the Tempo Club Dance is ON for this Saturday Night, February 20th! Not only is Dr. Berk Jones bringing the full 16 piece Annex Band, but he is also bringing 3 vocalists! According to Peter Ianniciello, he heard the group a couple of years ago and they are pretty impressive with the big band backing them up!

This Tempo dance will feature the Annex Band from Cambridge OH. This is a 16 piece big band under the leadership of Berk Jones. Berk is a talented musician and band leader, but most importantly he continues to inspire this group of musicians to preserve the “big band” sound in our current musical environment. The band’s renditions of traditional and more current numbers are spot on and show the commitment the band has to the music and their audience. The ages of the band members span decades, but they are unified in their love of the music and their high standard of musicianship. Every time I hear this band my confidence in the preservation of our American musical heritage grows. I know they enjoy playing for the Tempo Dance Club and we certainly enjoy having them.
