Hardware and Harmony Dance Friday May 25, 2012!

Hello Dancers,
 
     This is just a quick reminder that our 60th anniversary celebration, “Hardware & Harmony” is this Friday, May 25, beginning at 7:30 pm.
 
     The featured entertainment will be “Remember Then” from Athens, Ohio.  The eight member group performs some of the greatest hits of the 1950’s and 1960’s, and we have enjoyed dancing to them on several occasions. 
 
     The band will take the stage on our loading dock.   Our parking lot and North Second Avenue in front of the store will be used for lawn chair seating.  A section of the parking lot will be designated for dancing.  The surface is smooth asphalt, so wear comfortable shoes. 
 
     If you have questions or need directions (405 North Second Avenue, Middleport, Ohio) call Tim’s cell phone – 740-416-3748.  Please note that the speed limit in most of Pomeroy and all of Middleport is 25mph and it is strictly enforced.  There will be signs up directing you to free “Event Parking” in 3 different nearby lots.
 
    This is a free public event sponsored by King Ace Hardware.  Bring your dance partner and your lawn chair and join us for a fun evening.

Scott Kitchen Project entertains at River Cities Ballroom Dance on May 19, 2012!

This is a reminder that our last dance for the 2011-2012 season is this coming Saturday, 8 to 11:30 p.m. The band is the Scott Kitchen Project. Scott has been working hard to give us the types of dance songs we want. This evening we discussed both samba and mambo. Scott is from right here in Marietta, and I hope you will encourage him and the band to keep up the good work. I feel lucky to have a local band which is willing to play the tempos we need to ballroom dance. (As opposed to what I grew up with…I call “wiggle” dancing!)

For those of you who are not River Cities members, please consider joining us for the evening. The guest fee per couple is $60 per couple with reservation. $70 without reservation. Make a reservation by e-mail to either Clint Holley or myself by Saturday morning. If you are not sure, e-mail anyway!

Finally, as I am sure you have gotten loads of e-mails about the plight of our local dance clubs, please also consider joining River Cities. The membership is $200 per couple for the next season. If you can bring a check on May 19th for next year, it would go far to easing everyone’s fear that we might not exist next year! Bill Held students: you can give me a check in class!

Support the Tempo Dance Club – Join by May 31st!

A letter from Peter Ianniciello, the President of the Tempo Club:

Dear Ballroom Dancers,

I received a notice from the Oglebay Formals informing me that 2012 will be the last year for this venerable dance event. The “Formals” have provided dance opportunities for seventy years at the beautiful Pine Room at the Oglebay Resort. Susan and I have attended several of these dances and have reveled in the classic ballroom experience the “Formals” have provided. How sad to realize that ballroom music and dancing will no longer grace the Pine Room. I feel privileged to have experienced the “Formals” before the event passed into history.

Very often we assume that what we have known to be will simply continue because we cannot imagine it ending. The reality is that things do come to an end unless we support them. I hate to face the fact that the plight of the “Formals” in Wheeling can occur in Parkersburg quite easily. The Oglebay Formals are ending simply because of poor attendance. This should sound disturbingly familiar to those of us who are concerned about the future of our Parkersburg dance institution, the Tempo Club. The club has had a dwindling membership and erratic attendance at dances these past years. As we all know, this is due to a shrinking dance community and the lack of new dance couples who are interested in joining the dance community. Doug Reeder and I feel that this next season will determine if the club continues or goes the way of the Oglebay Formals.

Doug and I have managed the finances of the club over the past few years to provide quality music and venues that offered spacious floors for dancing. This past year we were forced to reduce our scheduled dances from six to five due to our financial condition. We simply do not have enough members in the club or guests attending the dances. Doug and I have agreed that if the club cannot reach a membership of twenty five member couples by May 31, then it is probably best to retire the Tempo Club. This will end a club that has a forty year history of providing ballroom dance opportunities in the Parkersburg area. This is a harsh reality to accept, but we have no alternative. Twenty-five member couples is an attainable number if the dance community decides to preserve ballroom dancing in Parkersburg.

It is now up to the dance community to accept this challenge and show support for ballroom dancing or allow it to pass into Parkersburg history. The membership is $200 per couple for five dances. Please send your membership fee to Doug before May 31, 2012, so a timely decision can be made about the future of the Tempo Club. A membership form is included with this post. If our goal is not met and the decision is made to dissolve the club, all payments will be returned.

We will keep you posted as to the progress by the chart shown below. We do have one couple who recently paid their dues and has kicked off the campaign.

Chef Yancy Wine Dinner and Dance April 21, 2012

Chef Yancy will once again be at the winery serving his culinary masterpiece on April 21 starting at 5 PM. The five course dinner includes hors d’oeuvres made by Stephanie, Tuxedo dipped chocolate strawberries, shrimp and crab meat romaine salad, smoked chicken and spinach ballantine wrapped with seared apple wood bacon, red skin potato rissole, vegetable medley, and cherries flambe’ with a coconut snow ball vanilla bean ice cream.

The 29.50 price (plus tip and tax) also includes music by DJ Frank Byers, five samples and one glass of wine. If purchased before April 16, an additional glass of wine will be included.
